National Diploma Performing Arts (Dance) students will be performing the curtain raiser to Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake at the Birmingham Hippodrome on Tuesday 9th February.
Over the next few weeks, 16 Year 1 Dance students will be working with young choreographers from Telford Cultural Zone to create new dance works to be performed as the curtain raiser. During the process, students will have the opportunity to work with company members from New Adventures, Matthew Bourne’s dance company.
Edward Pinner, Curriculum Area Manager for Performing Arts at Stratford-upon-Avon College said, “We are delighted our students have been offered this unique and extremely exciting opportunity to perform on the stage at the Birmingham Hippodrome. However, that is not the only experience the students will benefit from. Working with dancers from the Matthew Bourne Company who are at the pinnacle of their profession, will provide the students with an insight and a memory that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
“We must say thank you to the Birmingham Hippodrome, Dance Exchange and the Matthew Bourne Company for this fantastic opportunity. We know our dance students are incredibly talented and that many of them will, in time, go on to perform all over the world. This special performance will allow them to demonstrate their skills to a new audience in one of the most prestigious venues in the country. I know the audience will enjoy every minute of it!”
The performance is in association with the DanceXchange (dx), a partner organisation with the Birmingham Hippodrome (and Birmingham Royal Ballet) which offers exciting opportunities for people to engage in dance, either as a participant, performer or audience member.
Matthew Bourne’s triumphant modern re-interpretation of Swan Lake has turned tradition upside down and taken the dance world by storm. Firmly crowned as a modern-day classic, this iconic production is perhaps best-known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a ‘menacing’ male ensemble.
