Students from Stratford-upon-Avon College have recently entered the Royal Opera House’s AIDA Design Challenge.
Over twenty students from the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Production Arts (Design) course have entered the Royal Opera House's Design Challenge which has given students the opportunity to test and develop their design skills. As these students are from a Founder College of the National Skills Academy for Creative & Cultural, they have been able to enter this very special ‘NSA exclusive’ competition.
Students from the College have have been invited to submit entries in four design challenge categories: Stage Design, Costume Design, Poster and Online Educational Content. There will be three winners in each category for students studying at Level 2, 3 and 4 and above. The winning entrants in each category will be invited to spend a day at the Royal Opera House where they will have the opportunity to meet Royal Opera House staff, particularly those relevant to the category they have entered and visit backstage areas.
On 17th March 2011, the Royal Opera House will present a Matinee of Giuseppe Verdi’s Aida. During the day there will be an exhibition of students’ submissions and the winners will be announced.
Edward Pinner, Curriculum Area Manager for Performing Arts and Music at the College commented, “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students. Judy Hill, the College’s Production Arts Design Lecturer, has been working with her students creating the most wonderful designs which have now been sent to the Royal Opera House. The students will see their work displayed in the foyer of the Royal Opera House when they attend the performance on 17th March.”
Judy Hill, Lecturer in Production Arts said,
, “What is most impressive about the students’ work, especially the first year students, is that for many of them this is the first time they have ever constructed a complete costume. They have researched AIDA and taken many other influences to inspire their design work. Research done; the students created simple sketches which they then developed into detailed designs. After their designs were finalised they had to source and select materials that they then used in the creation of their costume.”
